Oregon’s cultural competency training requirement
Oregon requires licensed healthcare professionals to complete cultural competency continuing education (CCCE) as part of their ongoing professional development. This requirement was established to help providers improve communication, reduce health disparities, and strengthen patient relationships across different racial, ethnic, linguistic, and ability backgrounds.
Healthcare professionals can meet this requirement by taking OHA-approved courses, such as those offered by Quality Interactions, which focus on building cross-cultural communication skills and delivering person-centered care.
Newly approved courses to meet Oregon's CCCE requirement
We've added two more courses to our growing list of OHA-approved cultural competency courses. Each course is designed to address key challenges in communication and inclusivity to help providers meet requirements and improve care delivery.
Disability Awareness & Person-Centered Care (1 CE)
This course helps healthcare professionals recognize key communication cues and best practices for working with patients with disabilities. Nearly one in four adults in Oregon is disabled, so providing informed, inclusive care for this population is essential for improving overall health outcomes.
High-Quality Care for Individuals with Limited English Proficiency (1 CE)
Language barriers can create challenges in healthcare settings. This course provides strategies for effective communication with patients with limited English proficiency (LEP), ensuring compliance with language access laws and reducing the risk of miscommunication. In a state where more than 15% of residents speak a language other than English at home, improving communication skills for multilingual patient interactions is key to high-quality care.
Ensuring compliance with ADA and language access laws
Beyond improving patient interactions, these courses help healthcare professionals stay compliant with key regulations, including:
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): The ADA requires healthcare providers to offer effective communication and reasonable accommodations to patients with disabilities. This includes understanding accessibility needs, avoiding ableism, and providing inclusive care, all covered in our Disability Awareness course.
- Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act & Title VI of the Civil Rights Act: These regulations mandate language access for patients with limited English proficiency, requiring healthcare organizations to provide qualified interpreters and translated materials. Our LEP communication course helps providers navigate these legal requirements and apply best practices for language-inclusive care.
By participating in these courses, healthcare professionals meet Oregon’s cultural competency training requirement and strengthen compliance with federal laws designed to support equitable healthcare access.
